Research interests: Algebraic Geometry.
Algebraic and topological aspects of complex algebraic varieties;
in particular:
- geometry of irregular varieties;
- fibrations on varieties, in particular fibred surfaces;
- stability of polarized varieties;
- algebraic curves and their moduli space.
"I was always interested in the algebra which throws light on geometry, and I never quite developed the sense of pure algebra. Never. I'm not mentally made for purely formal algebra, formal mathematics. I have too much contact with real life, and that's geometry. Geometry is the real life." Oscar Zarisky, from "The unreal life of Oscar Zarisky", by Carol Parikh.
"Algebra is the offer made by the devil to the mathematician. The devil says: `I will give you this powerful machine, it will answer any question you like. All you need to do is give me your soul: give up geometry and you will have this marvellous machine.'"
Michael Atiyah (2004). Collected works. Vol. 6.
